We’re proud to share that Christopher Smith, founder and lead designer of Woodsmith Construction Inc., was recognized by the NKBA Pro Hub as one of their featured designers in September 2025.

A Lifelong Passion for Design and Building

Chris’ journey into design and construction began at home. Growing up surrounded by the creations of his father—an architect and builder—Chris had the rare experience of living inside the spaces that shaped his appreciation for design. That early influence fueled a career rooted in craftsmanship, creativity, and a commitment to quality.

Starting as a carpenter, Chris developed a passion for the details of construction. His curiosity for design led him to pursue his BCIN license as a designer, combining technical expertise with a builder’s eye for detail. In 2001, he founded Woodsmith Construction Inc., where he continues to lead a team dedicated to reimagining Toronto homes with innovative, sustainable, and timeless design.

Spotlight on The Herbert Project

The NKBA feature highlighted one of our most rewarding projects, The Herbert Project, located in Toronto’s Beaches neighbourhood.

This 100-year-old brick semi-detached home was transformed into a modern, light-filled residence while respecting its historical character. Highlights include:

  • Third-Floor Addition: A new primary suite with a rear cantilever, complete with a walkout deck for views and natural light.

  • Reimagined Second Floor: A functional new layout featuring three bedrooms and a bathroom.

  • Main Floor Renewal: Open-concept design with a welcoming front entry addition.

  • Basement Underpinning: Additional family and laundry space, maximizing the home’s footprint.

This project perfectly reflects our philosophy: balancing modern design and sustainability with the preservation of Toronto’s architectural charm.

Industry Recognition

The NKBA Pro Hub community praised Chris’ ability to merge hands-on building expertise with thoughtful, sustainable design practices. Woodsmith’s design-build model was noted for streamlining the renovation process, providing clients with a single point of contact from concept through construction.

This recognition underscores our mission: to deliver high-quality, functional, and sustainable renovations and custom homes across Toronto’s East End.
